The Year 6 Conference

“Ahhhh!” Ten seconds left.

Today was our Leadership conference. All the Donvale and Kew Year 6 students came to Metcalf Hall, as a whole cohort. Today our teachers had explained, that we were gong to do fun activities to become better leaders of the school.

We got assigned ur groups, I was in white. I was so happy because all my friends were I my group. When we entered Metcalf Hall chatter started to get loud, and my belly started to flutter into the air with excitement. 

The first activity we did was the newspaper challenge. Our teachers had explained that we were only to use the items we were given; newspaper and masking tape. The challenge as to make the tallest tower possible, using only those two items.

As soon as our teacher said go we all started to huddle, we’d all agreed one one great plan. Once we’d finished discussing we started to begin. Each of us grabbed a piece of newspaper and started to roll them up, whilst I was ripping pieces of tape. 

Mr Parks shouted out, “Ten seconds left”.

I squealed as the tower fell. Oh well next time our group teacher said.

Kangaroos

Boing ! Boing ! Their goes the native Australian animal. You could think its a  the big hopping mouse , also know as a  kangaroo. Ahhh its coming at me someone help! Its coming to kick me . Wow! It’s so fascinating how it balances while its two legs are in the air. But Ahhhhhhh ! Its chasing me.  

If you know about these amazing animals some places you can find them are, in quiet area like dry grass, cane areas and near trees and dams. These animals are marsupials they are very shy and you wont find them in your backyard. 

These animals are a very big figure head for Australia. They are very well known. They are tall so they can over the tall grass. They are furry because they need warmth. They have small arms so they can balance.   

These Animals have lots of Australian names like Kangaroos, joey , kangas and roo’s. This come from the Australian slang as we do with a lot of words we make up. 

Some things these animals do to help them are licking their pouch so its clean for its baby. Another thing they do is look around for danger. Another thing is holding their baby in its pouch until in 9 months old so it doesn’t get attacked and so it doesn’t run of and then it can leave it. 

Some  predators that kangaroos have are snakes other kangaroos crocodiles and dingoes. Also human as some of them can me slaughtered for food. And the wedge tailed Eagle.

Year 5 production

“Beautiful, oh isn’t it beautiful”. It was our year 5 production. Hanging Onto The Bottom Of The World. My character was a governor. I was the Governor of Victoria. 

One challenge that I had with my role was learning my lines. The day I got my lines I was so scared! I had 27 lines. I thought to myself that I cant do this but at night performance I was so prepared and I had learnt all my lines. Another struggle I had was acting. It was my first time acting I had no experience and I was freaking out. At the performance I was acting and now I have so much experience. 

I’d like to give a shoutout to Harvey he had a lot of lines and got them all nailed down. And one person forgot their line and he just kept on going. Another person who was absolutely amazing was Hannah she had a main role and now watching her I can tell why she had learnt all her lines and thats pretty amazing and then she had gone further and acted “beautifully”. 

I’d like to thank all the teachers for helping us with this milestone. I want to thank miss Q for organising this and being the best director. I would also like to thank Tim for helping. Also all the year 5 teachers for helping backstage and graham for getting the sand for us and all the other people for painting Australian shape. Also like to thank all the coral teachers like Tess, Sabina, Leanne. 

I would rate the performance a great team effort. I think that I can improve on my acting skills. I think that I can take my character a bit further. In my opinion I felt more scared backstage then onstage but onstage I feel at home. 

Celabrations

In my family we celebrate Christmas. This is a time where our family gathers around a green tree.  We  share a big meal,  in our family the oldest makes the meal.  This person is our grandma. She makes traditional food. As we are Italian we eat pasta chicken and a salad. We also drink wine to show the new blood of baby Jesus. 

The night before Christmas we go to Mass. This is a time where Christian’s go to church. Sometimes this goes of 1 hour to 2 hours. 

The next morning we wake up but don’t open anything until the whole family arrives and our parents our awake. 

The day before we set up we have mini figures of the nativity set up as well as coloured tinsel. These colours are red and  green. 

In our family the night before Christmas we leave a glass of milk some cookies and a carrot the reason why we do this is because there is a figure who gives present to children he is called Santa he comes to children’s house’s at midnight and brings gifts.

 He eats the cookies and drinks the milk. The carrot is for his favourite raiders, he is called Rudolph.  That is how we celebrate Christmas. If you celebrate Christmas how do you celebrate it ? 

Camp Review

This term we went to the Gippsland lakes also as we call it Toona . We did a lot of fun activities. One activity that I really enjoyed was a game it is called King Ball it our school’s tradition its kind of like four square. One of the PLA’S that I used during this game was collaborating with the people playing I say this because we pass the ball to each other another PLA that I used was communicating with the class during the game I say this is because we spoke to each other.

A challenge that I had to overcome was kayaking I say this because I had never done it was scared that it was going to tip over and I would fall into the water. A PLA that I used was Courage because I was scared at first but I gave it a go. On day two we went on a very fast speed boat and it was going way to fast ! And that same day wewent fishing. As us kids are always moving around we found fishing a bit boring but we enjoyed each others company by the pier. We also saw jellyfish floating. That same day we had lunch at a park then we had another activity we went bike riding and koala spotting we saw 28 koalas. Then we went back to camp. The next day we had breakfast and had free time for the morning then later day we went to have a picnic lunch and me , Nik , Matilda, Eleanor , Lara , hutchy played volleyball. Then we followed a trail down and did a sketch of what we could see. And that we slept in tents and I slept with Nik and stay . That night we played Empires around the fire. Then in the morning it was a day of packing up and we left. I loved this camp and cant wait to come next year when i’m in year six.  

Hard Road Ahead

Hard Road Ahead Reflection 

At Sovereign hill I learnt that the life in the 1850’s was very different to now. I learnt that school was for the rich or they would have said gold pouring over the counter the technology wasn’t like today the latest technology was a flip black board. Another thing that I learnt was that they used ink at the school. I also learnt that the Chinese people were very un welcome and that we had killed and hurt and hung them because they were different and then the government had made more racist rules for them. 

1850’s businesses where not very creative I say this because all of the stores where clothing stores for shopping for food more the usual but that wasn’t not expected its the 1850’s. But they were the only needed as they didn’t want to invest in a store that wasn’t completely needed and it wouldn’t make a lot of  money.   

An important date that I learnt was the year 1854 I say this is because it was the year of the gold pour the year of the successful people to become even more the year that that the population had doubled. Another year that was important was 1853 because Melbourne was the fastest growing state in the world. 

I chose the Chinese medicine store because my partner had just came from China and we thought that she would now some things about the store. We also chose the Criterion store because I love fashion and Jessica has a very good talent for art and she’s very creative. 

This task was a lot of fun but it was a challenge because my partner didn’t know much English so I had to help her with all the writing tasks but the making of the diorama was a successful trial and we both had a lot of fun.We overcame this challenge by me doing most of the writing and explaining and Jessica did the Chinese medicine because she knew a bit more about it. Another challenge that I had was writing with a nibbed pen and ink I overcame this challenge by writing with the writing position.

Book week

What makes a good information book? 

 It  may help to have  Realistic pictures in an information book,  because if you have unrealistic pictures  the reader  may not know what you have drawn, and it may not create a picture in the readers head. 

 Another thing that makes a good book is clear and readable information. The reason why I say this is because if it doesn’t make sense or  the font isn’t legible,  you don’t  know what the book is about. 

 Another thing that would make a good book is that it  has facts that can be proven and also add fun facts to make your layout appealing to the reader.   Also go into detail with your story as it can impact the readers visual. 

What is your favourite or was your favourite short listed book ? 

My favourite short listed book was Our Birds because there were short and sharp facts,  there were good readable fonts, clear photos and it also had  colours to make it pop . 

I also like this book because its on birds witch are one of my favourite animals. Another reason why its a good book is because its a book that contains a  lot of facts but not to much writing that it makes you overwhelmed.
